2011 - 2012 Concert Season
The Choral Society's complete 2011-2012 season, is generously supported by a grant from The Pennsylvania Partners in the Arts, a joint effort of the PA Council on the Arts and the Scranton Area Foundation, and by a Lackawanna County Arts and Cultural Grant, a program of the Lackawanna County Commissioners and the Lackawanna County Council on the Arts.

Nobody does pomp and circumstance like the British. Our season opens with music of such high ceremony, including selections from the most recent royal wedding (Sir Charles Hubert Parry's ode, Blest Pair of Sirens, and his coronation anthem, I Was Glad); each accompanied by organist extraordinaire, Mark Laubach. A Baroque orchestra and soloists then join us for George Frideric Handel's moving 1737 Funeral Anthem for Queen Caroline. High Tea follows!

Northeast Pennsylvania's newest holiday tradition! Welcome the season with a song as our full array of choirs - children, youth, and adult - join for music of the season, audience singing of traditional carols, and a festive holiday reception. As part of this concert, we also collect new, unwrapped, non-violent toys and cash donations for the U.S. Marine Corp Reserves' "Toys for Tots" program.

Add the refined sound of our Choral Artists Ensemble singing music matched to the words of the traditional English Service of Lessons and Carols, audience caroling, organ music, and a concluding wassail reception, and your holiday spirit is guaranteed. American shape-note hymn collections such as the 1816 Kentucky Harmony, 1844 Sacred Harp, and 1835 Southern Harmony preserve a treasury of sacred texts and tunes that convey not only the rough energy and confidence of a new land, but the sorrows and hard lives that accomplished its building. We survey the finest of these memorable and often haunting songs.
