The Margaret and Nicholas Healy Awards
The Margaret and Nicholas Healy Awards were established for the Singers Guild of Scranton in 1995 by Rosemary and James Bell in honor of Rosemary's parents, Margaret and Nicholas Healy. The Healys were instrumental in giving all of their six children a love of music, exposing them to orchestral concerts, operas, musicals, and ballet performances. No Broadway show went unseen and thus their children all took joy in participating in high-school theatrical productions. Margaret and Nicholas Healy were long active in many musical endeavors in both their own community of Garden City, Long Island and in New York City, with Mr. Healy singing with the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick's Glee Club of New York City for over sixty years. In their home one always heard music playing whether from a radio, CD, or Margaret herself at the piano. In all, they were active in raising three generations of music lovers, and thus, this award is lovingly dedicated to Margaret and Nicholas Healy as a continuance of that musical legacy.
Mrs. Healy passed away in December of 2003, leaving also a legacy of extraordinary community work. Born in Brooklyn, she graduated from St. Agnes Seminary and earned a BA from St. Joseph's College of Brooklyn and a BS in economics from St. John's University. She taught in the New York City public school system and later married Nicholas Healy, a founding partner of Healy and Baillie, an admiralty law firm. Mrs. Healy believed deeply that "to him much is given, much is to be expected," and used her many talents to devote herself to helping others. She was a board member of the Junior Leagues of both St. Mary's Hospital Brooklyn and the Mercy Hospital Garden City, and as a member of the board of trustees for the Nassau Hospital Auxiliary and a 34-year volunteer at Winthrop's Thrift Shop, she logged more than 15,000 hours in raising hundreds of thousands of dollars for the Hospital. And, as an accomplished pianist, she memorized a repertory of some 5000 songs and played regularly for the Stratford Avenue Elementary School, the New York Lighthouse for the Blind, and Garden City High School. A world traveler, she visited countless countries and continents, and was thus, of course, also an active supporter and volunteer for student exchange programs. With Nicholas, she shared a special fondness for Ireland, where they vacationed at their summer home in Glengarriff, West Cork for 30 years.
